cabbage and kale

It is dark and rainy today. The fire is going, the room is warm  and I have settled down to paint.
I have a friend that likes my garden paintings, all of which have been sold. It has been a few years since I have painted one, as I have been interested in other subjects. This friend asked me to paint a garden scene so I will make a few before I get back to my abstracts. I won't be going out to the garden to paint right now but I have taken many photos of the flowers and vegetables.  i picked some kale yesterday for dinner. Even though it has been covered by snow and frozen, when the temperature  is above freezing the kale unthaws and is good to pick.

winter night

I did this painting  from a sketch of a house in Waldoboro, a number of years ago and it sold. I thought it appropriate since we have had a few days of very cold weather.
All the Christmas decorations are put away and it is time to do some serious painting.

Yes I am working on the commission of the cove scene for Lynn my neighbor.

Christmas letter

xmas_2011.rtfd.zip Download this file

Every Christmas I write a letter that is a review of some of the events of my life. Christmas has always been my favorite time of year. It is a time when people are kinder to each other. I love the stories, music, decorations, lights, family gatherings  and best of all I love a live balsam fir tree that reaches the ceiling decorated with ornaments and lights. I celebrate Christ's birth, his energy of light, love and hope, transcending and overcoming darkness.

white Christmas

A light snow has been falling most of this Christmas day. Doug, Christina  and I have enjoyed a quiet day. After a breakfast of blueberry pancakes we opened presents by the tree.  We walked the dogs and now 4 o'clock  tree lights and candles in the windows reflect there  images in the glass as snow flakes slowly decent from a darkening sky. Christmas Eve friends came for dinner, seven adults, three small children  and four dogs. It was a bit hectic. I love the company, to have friends and family together for Christmas. Best wishes for the holidays

Hopper show

On the 14th of October  i saw the Hopper show in Brunswick at the Bowdoin College Art Museum.  It was a major show of about, my guess100 paintings, all painted in Maine. Most of the paintings i had never seen before in books or the Boston show a few years back. It was exciting and inspiring to see. I bought the catalog book. I love my art books. Some people have said my architectural paintings remind them of Hopper, I do not try to emulate Hopper however most  artists are influenced by other artists works that they like, and Hopper is one of my favorite painters.

abstract painting "Cube"

Oct 1 2011
I plan to do some abstract paintings based on sacred geometry. I have been working on the Cube, 30x40 acrylic. From the sketches you see how I worked the geometry. there are several ways to get the 5 sided pentagon. One way is from the square. I took images of the canvas as I worked  out the design and colors.  On the right is the circle squared, the middle section has the 4, 5, and 6 sided shapes, the cube shape and the equilateral triangle with extended lines going to the edges. I didn't like the light purple square and kept the enclosed 6 sided shapes all warm colors. Last I added the dark lines. They may look random but I spent some time redrawing them until they looked right for the composition.
